Should You Use 3 Tags or 30? What Wedding Photographers Need to Know About Blog Tag Strategy

April 23, 2025

You’ve written a blog post you’re proud of. You scroll to the bottom, stare at the “tags” section, and suddenly your brain goes full goblin mode:

“Do I tag Nashville weddings? Summer wedding inspo? Emotional vows? Film photographer? Bride in cowboy boots??”

Before you know it, you’ve added 20+ tags — and not one of them is helping your SEO.

At North+South, we get asked this all the time: Should I use more tags or fewer tags on my blog posts? And the answer? It’s less than you think — but smarter than you realize.

Let’s break it down.

Tags Are for Readers — Not for Google

Here’s the thing: tags don’t directly boost your SEO like keywords do. Tags are there to help organize your content and make it easier for visitors to find related posts on your site.

If you treat them like keywords, you’re creating dozens of unnecessary tag pages that:

  • Compete with your real blog posts
  • Dilute your site authority
  • Create duplicate or “thin” content (a big no-no for ranking)

Why Too Many Tags Hurt You

Each tag creates its own archive page (like yoursite.com/tag/wedding-dresses), which Google will crawl. If that tag only has one or two blog posts? It’s seen as weak content. Multiply that by 20+ tags per post… and you’ve got a problem.

Also, if your tags are super specific and only used once (ex: “gold heels with pearl details”), they do absolutely nothing except clutter your backend and slow down your site.

The Sweet Spot: How Many Tags Should You Use?

Here’s what we recommend:

✅ Stick to 3–5 tags per post
✅ Use tags that apply to multiple posts on your site
✅ Choose tags that a reader would actually click on
✅ Create a reusable tag list — and stick to it!

Sample Tag Strategy for Photographers

Instead of creating new tags every time, build a mini tag library like this:

  • wedding photographer marketing
  • SEO for creatives
  • website design tips
  • branding for photographers
  • blogging for wedding pros
  • Charleston wedding inspiration
  • destination wedding content

You don’t need 50 tags. You need the right tags, used consistently.

So the next time you’re tempted to drop 20+ tags into your post like they’re confetti… pause.

Pick 3 to 5 that truly make sense. That’s what keeps your site clean, strategic, and Google-friendly.
